Late Professor H.A. Odelola
Professor Herbert Akinlolu Odelola, a graduate of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, where he obtained his B. Pharm degree joined the services of the University of Ibadan as a Junior Research Fellow of Virology in 1972 and was promoted to the rank of Professor of Virology in 1991. He was Dean, Faculty of Pharmacy, UI from 1995-1999. A Honorary Research Fellow of the University of the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Professor H.A. Odelola was actively involved in the establishment of the Department of Clinical Pharmacy after serving as Head of the then Department of Pharmaceutical Microbiology and Clinical Pharmacy, University of Ibadan, and was also involved in the preparation of the five-year Pharmacy Curriculum in the University of Ibadan.
Professor Herbert Odelola obtained several awards, fellowships and prizes some of which are: the Unesco-Czechoslovakia Academy of Science Fellowship, Commonwealth Foundation Fellowship, London and Commonwealth medical Fellowship, Birmingham, Great Britain. He was a resource person to the Nigeria Medical Council in the training of Resident Doctors from 1977 to 1982.
Professor Herbert Odelola was described during the inaugural lecture of the first PhD student he supervised as a Man who nudges you on with implicit word of wisdom to ensure you attain your goal. Though he is no longer with us, we are comforted in the fact that his work lives on. The family of Late Professor H.A. Odelola recently endowed a prize in honor of this Patriarch to the best graduating student in Pharmacy and best Student in Pharmaceutical Microbiology at masters Level. He is survived by a wonderful wife, children and grandchildren. Ladies and gentlemen, I present this posthumous award to Late Professor Herbert Akinlolu Odelola.
