Welcome to the Department of Pharmacognosy, Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Ibadan., Nigeria. The department has a staff complement of seven academic staff members comprising of one Professor and a Reader, and other lecturers, two technologists, four administrative staff, and many students at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The Department is primarily engaged in the teaching of crude drugs under the Bachelor of Pharmacy degree (B. Pharm.) that is awarded by the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Ibadan. The overall goal of the Department is to largely contribute to the multidisciplinary drug research and development from natural products, using the rich flora of Africa as the main accessible raw material. The Department runs a postgraduate program leading to the degree of Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Pharmacognosy, which consists of crude drug standardization and general crude drug analysis, as well as the degrees of M.Phil. and Ph.D. which involve laboratory research in different specific areas of the subject of Pharmacognosy such as phytochemistry, the biological activities of Nigerian medicinal plants, tissue culture, and standardization and molecular authentication of medicinal plants.

Similarly, with effect from 2012/2013 academic session, the Department started running a formal Postgraduate Diploma Program in Herbal Medicine (PGDHM) to train and produce the required manpower for the progressively emerging herbal industry in Nigeria and the ECOWAS.  With an emphasis on drug discovery from nature, the department teaches students in contemporary trends in phytochemical analysis and medicinal plant research. Additionally, the department is home to the Master of Science program in Medicinal Plants Research and Drug Development. The course is one of the programmes of the Pan African University Life and Earth Sciences Institute (including Health and Agriculture) with funding for students from several African countries. The teaching and research facilities in the department include standard laboratories with relevant equipment supports in addition to other useful items of equipment accessible to the Department from other university units; there is a Herbarium, housed in the Department of Pharmacognosy, for medicinal plant authentication and conservation.
