Pharmacognosy & Herbal Medicine
Welcome to the Department of Pharmacognosy, Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Ibadan, Nigeria. The Department is primarily engaged in teaching crude drugs as part of the Doctor of Pharmacy degree (Pharm. D.) that is awarded by the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Ibadan. The overall goal of the Department is to make a significant contribution to multidisciplinary drug research and development from natural products, utilizing the rich flora of Africa as the primary accessible raw material. The Department runs a postgraduate program leading to the degree of Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Pharmacognosy, which consists of crude drug standardization and general crude drug analysis, as well as the degrees of M.Phil. and Ph.D., which involve laboratory research in different specific areas of the subject of Pharmacognosy.
Similarly, with effect from the 2012/2013 academic session, the Department started running a formal Postgraduate Diploma Program in Herbal Medicine (PGDHM) to train and produce the required manpower for the progressively emerging herbal industry in Nigeria and the ECOWAS.
Currently, the Department has a complement of 8 academic staff, including an Emeritus Professor and 2 Professors, and also 5 non-academic staff members. The teaching and research facilities in the department include standard laboratories with relevant equipment supports in addition to other useful items of equipment accessible to the Department from other university units; there is a Herbarium, housed in the Department of Pharmacognosy, for medicinal plant authentication and conservation.
